Week’s Most Important News in the World of Gambling (February 28 – March 7)

UK Gambling Commission to explore crypto payments

The UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) is officially exploring cryptoassets for licensed gambling. Executive Director Tim Miller announced this shift at the Betting and Gaming Council AGM. Consequently, the regulator will now examine how digital currency fits into Britain’s legal framework.

Recently, the government introduced the Financial Services and Markets Act 2000 (Cryptoassets) Regulations 2025. If approved, the FCA will oversee all crypto activities starting 25 October 2027. Therefore, any firm using crypto must first gain FCA authorisation.

Currently, crypto often drives players toward unlicensed sites. Because of this, Miller wants to bring crypto into the regulated sector. He argues that innovation is a key tool for consumer protection. Thus, offering legal crypto options may stop players from using “black market” operators.

While embracing change, Miller also demanded “regulatory stability.” He warned that a “treadmill of reform” could waste vital resources. Instead, the industry needs time to adapt to recent laws.

Meanwhile, the UKGC is ramping up enforcement with £26 million in new funding. Furthermore, they are partnering with platforms like Meta to block illegal adverts.
