Brazil gambling platforms have faced stricter rules as government finalises age-verification system
Brazil’s government is putting the final touches on a new decree to protect children and adolescents online. The legislation, expected by the end of February, aims to block young users from accessing gambling and other inappropriate content.
The move will enforce regulations approved in 2025. These rules require digital platforms and app stores to adopt identity verification systems.
According to O Globo, the new measures will apply to a wide range of services. This includes sites and apps offering gambling, betting, adult content, and weapons.
The government plans to develop its own age-verification system. Websites will be able to use this official tool. Self-declarations of age will no longer be acceptable.
Furthermore, the decree will outline strong safeguards for personal data. It will impose strict limits on identity tracking and browsing history. It will also set clear rules for handling user requests. Consequently, the text may still see minor adjustments before President Lula’s administration finalises it.
The move faces resistance from opposition parliamentarians. They argue the measures could lead to censorship. However, the government insists the primary goal is child safety in the digital space.
