Sweden has proposed new bill to extend gambling credit ban
The Swedish Government has put forward a new bill that would tighten restrictions on gambling financed with credit. If approved, the law will take effect on 1 April 2026.
The proposal introduces amendments to Sweden’s Gambling Act. Under the changes, licensed gambling operators must take active steps to block players from using any form of credit to gamble. This includes credit cards and other credit-based payment methods.
The Swedish Gambling Authority, Spelinspektionen, has confirmed that the goal is to reduce the problem of gambling debt across the country. The regulator will also retain the power to grant exemptions in cases where it considers the move to be in the public interest.
Sweden already enforces a ban on gambling with credit cards. The new bill goes further. It not only prevents players from funding gambling with credit but also stops operators from offering credit to customers in any form.
The first stage of the credit ban came into force in June 2025 as part of a trial period. This extension signals the government’s intent to make the restrictions permanent.
Sweden is not alone in this approach. Australia introduced similar rules in early 2024, reflecting a wider international effort to protect consumers from gambling-related harm.
