The French ombudsman urges operators to move more quickly on suspending accounts

The French gambling ombudsman Médiateur des Jeux has released its annual report in collaboration with the regulatory body L’Autorité Nationale des Jeux (ANJ). The report criticises gambling operators for delaying or rejecting requests to suspend accounts.

Honorary magistrate Denys Millet urged operators to promptly implement suspension measures when a player does not respond to prevention messages, evades contact attempts, or exhibits a significant increase in deposits and bets, indicating a loss of control.

The report noted that the number of addiction-related referrals remains low compared to the number of problem gamblers. It also highlighted a rise in complaints about account closures from players who do not see themselves as problem gamblers.

Additionally, the report recommended guidelines for refunding player accounts in cases of suspected fraud. It emphasised that while suspicions regarding document authenticity can justify account closure, operators must provide specific factual reasons if they choose to confiscate deposits. Furthermore, any suspicious activity should be reported to the financial tracking unit, TRACFIN.
