Spanish online gambling revenue increased by 15.1% in Q1
In the first quarter of the year, Spain’s gross online gambling revenue reached €350.7 million, marking a 15.1% increase compared to Q1 2023 and an 11.2% rise from the previous quarter.
Data from the Spanish gambling regulator, DGOJ, highlighted that online casinos were the primary revenue source, generating €167.8 million, which accounts for 47.8% of the total online gambling revenue. This represents a 17% year-on-year growth, although it is a 2.1% decrease from Q4 2023. Within the online casino sector, slots and roulette were the standout performers, with revenue increases of 15% and 22%, respectively.
Sports betting revenue amounted to €150.3 million, making up 42.9% of the total revenue. This figure reflects a 15.4% rise from Q1 2023 and a 31% increase from Q4. Notably, pre-match betting revenue surged by 588.8%, while in-play betting revenue declined by 31.7%. Other types of bets experienced a modest 1.6% growth, but horse racing betting revenue dropped by 28.4%.
At the end of Q1, Spain had 78 licensed online gambling operators: 50 offering online casino services, 41 providing betting options, nine focused on poker, four on bingo, and two on contests. Total deposits rose by 15.9% to €1.09 billion, and withdrawals increased by 13.9% to €740 million. Additionally, the number of new accounts grew by 33.6%, reaching 446,586.
Marketing expenditure in Q1 also saw a significant increase, rising 14.9% year-on-year to €112.8 million. Of this, €55.7 million was allocated to promotions, €41.8 million to advertising, €14.3 million to affiliates, and €1.1 million to sponsorship.
