UK Parliament has approved online slot stake limits

The UK Parliament has passed new rules capping maximum stakes for online slot games. This marks a significant shift in British gambling regulations.

From 29 January 2025, a £5 per spin limit will apply to players aged 25 and over. For those aged 18-24, the limit will be £2 per spin. The phased rollout gives operators six weeks to implement the £5 cap, followed by another six weeks for the £2 limit.

Stephanie Peacock, Parliamentary Under-Secretary for Culture, Media and Sport, highlighted online slots as the highest-risk gambling product. They are linked to high binge-play rates and major financial losses.

The UK’s online gambling sector generates £6.9 billion annually, with slots contributing £3.6 billion. Critics argue that high stakes fuel problem gambling.

Not all MPs welcomed the changes. Opposition spokesman Louie French warned of negative effects on businesses and the gambling industry.

The government has promised a five-year review to assess the impact of the stake limits.

The Liberal Democrats support the changes but call for stricter rules on gambling ads, black market betting, and loot boxes.

Meanwhile, in Northern Ireland, where online gambling remains unregulated, Jim Allister demanded urgent reforms. He urged the UK government to push local authorities to tackle higher-than-average gambling addiction in the region.

NetBet Denmark players can now enjoy a variety of Elk Studios titles. Claudia Georgevici, PR manager at NetBet Denmark, highlighted Elk Studios’ reputation for crafting award-winning and innovative casino games.

Gambling Commission launches consultation on safer gaming machines

The Gambling Commission has opened a 16-week consultation to improve the safety and fairness of gaming machines in Britain. Running from 29 January to 20 May 2025, this marks the third phase of the 2023 Gambling Act Review White Paper implementation.

Key proposals include:

  • Time and money limit-setting to promote responsible gambling.
  • Clearer safer gambling messages on machine displays.
  • New consolidated technical standards replacing the existing twelve.
  • A new licence condition and social responsibility code provision.
  • Industry-led improvements to three existing standards.

Tim Miller, Executive Director for Research and Policy, highlighted the need for stakeholder feedback to assess the impact and cost of these changes. He urged consumers, businesses, and industry experts to provide evidence on regulatory implications.

The consultation aims to balance consumer protection with business costs, ensuring gaming machines meet modern safety standards.
