In 2023, the iGaming market in the Philippines generated a remarkable revenue exceeding 58 billion pesos
In 2023, online gambling revenues in the Philippines surged to 58.16 billion pesos, marking nearly a twofold increase compared to 2022 and surpassing the previous record set in 2019 at 32.24 billion pesos.
The oversight of gambling activities in the nation falls under the jurisdiction of the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR). Alejandro Tengco, the chairman of PAGCOR, unveiled these latest financial statistics during the ICE London 2024 exhibition. He attributed the remarkable growth in revenue to political reforms within the country.
Tengco highlighted that the number of licensed gaming sites operating in the Philippines has reached an all-time high, with over 1,000 online platforms currently active, and this number is anticipated to continue its growth.
Earlier it was reported that taxes on casino winnings may be reduced in the Philippines.
The Hungarian regulator has resumed its efforts to block unlicensed gambling sites and their affiliates
The Hungarian Supervisory Authority for Regulatory Affairs (SZTFH) recently announced the blocking of numerous gambling sites and affiliates operating without local licence. Approximately 450 domains offering online casino, sports betting, and crypto gambling have been targeted.
Initiating such measures since 2014, SZTFH’s actions have faced legal challenges, with operators contending that Hungary’s gambling regulations contradict European law. In 2017, the European Court of Justice ruled in favour of operators based in the European Union, leading to the lifting of blocks against their sites. However, SZTFH is now reinstating blocks for operators lacking local licences.
Under the new conditions, operators must have held online casino or sports betting licences in another EEA country for a minimum of five years before seeking a Hungarian licence. Consequently, some operators have chosen to exit the market.
The presence of online casinos in the United States has resulted in a positive impact on the revenue of brick-and-mortar casinos
Eilers and Krejcik Gaming (EKG), a consulting firm, conducted a study on the impact of online casinos on the revenue of brick-and-mortar casinos. Their report indicates a positive effect of iGaming on traditional casinos.
EKG analysed data for over 16 years from casinos, regulators, and regional governments across six selected states: Connecticut, Delaware, Michigan, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. The study compared the cumulative quarterly growth rates of GGR from traditional casinos before and after the introduction of iGaming. In each state, the advent of online gaming resulted in positive changes for traditional establishments.
Among these states, West Virginia’s brick-and-mortar casinos demonstrated the highest growth rate in gross income at 6%. Similarly, the introduction of iGaming led to increased gross income for traditional casinos in the other five states.
Furthermore, the study by EKG highlighted the distinction in player demographics between brick-and-mortar and online casinos. This insight was drawn from a presentation by Golden Nugget Online Gaming to investors in June 2020. According to the report, 55% of online casino users are men, with an average age range of 40-45 years. In contrast, the audience of traditional casinos is comprised of 51% females, with an average age range of 50-55 years.
