GGL warns against illegal gambling during the festive season

The Joint Gambling Authority of the States (GGL) has issued a crucial warning for the holiday season. The authority cautions against the dangers of gambling with illegal operators, especially as the Christmas period often sees a surge in gambling activity.

Online gambling becomes particularly tempting during the festive season. Operators ramp up advertising campaigns and offer enticing bonuses. Many people have extra free time over the holidays, and festive stress can push some toward risky gambling behaviours.

Unlicensed gambling platforms pose serious risks to players. They lack vital protections like deposit limits and self-exclusion tools. These safeguards are essential for preventing addiction. Without them, players face a higher likelihood of developing gambling problems.

Financial risks are also a major concern. Illegal operators may fail to pay out winnings or misuse sensitive information, such as IDs and payment details. The GGL highlights these threats to protect consumers.

To raise awareness, the GGL has launched an FAQ section on its website. It answers critical questions about illegal gambling, including:

  • The consequences of gambling on platforms without a German licence.
  • The role of OASIS connections in preventing addiction.
  • The financial dangers of using unlicensed operators.

The FAQ explains that winnings on illegal platforms are rarely honoured. It also warns that personal data is at significant risk of being exploited.

The GGL urges players to check the official whitelist of approved operators. Licensed platforms comply with strict regulations to ensure fair play and protect users.

EGBA calls on Austria to reform online casino regulations

Austria is at a critical point as discussions to modernise its gambling regulations gain momentum. Unlike 21 EU member states that have embraced multi-licensing frameworks for online casinos, Austria, along with Poland, still clings to a monopoly system.

This monopoly model faces growing criticism for its significant shortcomings. Experts highlight weak consumer protections, limited regulatory oversight, and a loss of substantial tax revenues as key issues.

The European Gaming and Betting Association (EGBA) has raised concerns about the risks linked to Austria’s monopoly approach. Thousands of Austrian players are turning to unregulated offshore gambling sites. These platforms lack consumer safeguards, exposing users to financial and legal vulnerabilities.

Current negotiations involving Chancellor Nehammer, Chairman Babler, and Chairwoman Meinl-Reisinger provide a crucial opportunity for reform. The EGBA is urging Austria to adopt a competitive multi-licensing system for online casinos, similar to systems already implemented across much of Europe.

Finland recently decided to end its monopoly, aiming to open its gambling market by 2026.

Adopting a multi-licensing framework could bring Austria significant benefits. The EGBA estimates the country could generate over €1 billion in additional tax revenue by 2030.

EGBA’s Secretary General, Maarten Haijer, supports the shift. He stated: “The evidence from across Europe is clear. Multi-licensing works. It channels gambling activity into the regulated market, protects consumers, and boosts tax revenue.”

Swintt expands Dutch iGaming presence with Hommerson.nl partnership

Swintt has expanded its footprint in the regulated Dutch iGaming market through a partnership with Hommerson.nl. The operator, licensed by the Kansspelautoriteit (Dutch Gambling Authority), will integrate over 140 Swintt games into its online platform.

This collaboration introduces two key game categories to Hommerson.nl: the SwinttPremium collection and Elysium Studios titles, powered by Swintt.

The SwinttPremium collection delivers a classic casino experience. Features such as jackpots and respins are designed to appeal to fans of traditional slots.

Elysium Studios titles, on the other hand, cater to modern players. These mobile-friendly video slots feature contemporary themes and innovative bonus features, attracting a new generation of online gamers.

Swintt has been expanding its reach across Europe in 2023. Earlier this year, the company entered the UK market via a collaboration with White Hat Gaming. This partnership brought SwinttPremium and Elysium Studios games to multiple UK platforms.

Lars Kollind, Swintt’s Head of Business Development, said: “The Netherlands has become a crucial market for Swintt this year. Partnering with Hommerson.nl allows us to further solidify our online presence in the country.”

Remco van den Berg, CEO of Hommerson.nl, noted: “Our platform is renowned for offering over 2,000 top-tier casino titles. This partnership with Swintt enhances our gaming variety and reinforces our commitment to providing the best options for players.”
