Romania has implemented a ban on gambling activities in rural areas
The Romanian parliament has given its approval to Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu’s executive order aimed at banning gambling activities in small rural towns. With a resounding majority of 243 deputies voting in favour of the measure and only four abstentions, the Legea Păcănelelor has now been enacted.

The ban prohibits the operation of gambling venues and gaming machines in towns with fewer than 15,000 registered inhabitants, a move expected to impact around 90 percent of all localities in Romania.
The implementation of this ban will necessitate the closure of several betting offices operated by Romania’s 27 licensed gambling operators, prominent among them being SuperBet, StanleyBet, and Casa Pariurilor. There are currently no plans in place to compensate these operators for their losses.
Speaking on the matter, Prime Minister Ciolacu emphasised that this move, coupled with other regulatory measures, is designed to safeguard the well-being of citizens. “We have taken significant steps, including increasing gambling taxes and tightening regulations within the sector,” he stated. “By banning gambling activities in towns with fewer than 15,000 residents, we are furthering our commitment to protecting our people.”

Analysts say that regulated online gambling is poised to modestly boost the profits of brick-and-mortar casinos in the USA
Analysis Group, in collaboration with the Sports Betting Alliance, has undertaken a study assessing the potential impacts of regulated online gambling on the profitability of brick-and-mortar casinos. Their findings suggest a slight increase in profits for land-based casinos, along with an anticipated rise in tax revenues.
According to Analysis Group’s research, the legalisation of the iGaming industry in New York could yield approximately $18 billion in revenue over four years. Similarly, Illinois might see around $9.2 billion in revenue from the regulated online casino market. Maryland and Virginia are forecasted to potentially generate $5.5 billion and $5.4 billion respectively over the same period. Louisiana’s projected revenue is $3.9 billion.
The study conducted by Analysis Group relied on data from six American states where online gambling is legal, taking into consideration factors such as sports betting and consumer behaviour. Its aim was to gain insights into the dynamics between the iGaming sector and traditional casino markets.
As the trend of legalising online sports betting slows down, attention is increasingly turning towards regulating the iGaming industry. Against this backdrop, the Analysis Group report holds particular significance. Moreover, this and similar studies challenge the notion of online casinos having a detrimental impact on traditional ones.

In the Q1 of the year, the Ukrainian gambling regulator has issued a total of 152 licences
In the first quarter of the year, the Ukrainian Commission for the Regulation of Gambling and Lotteries (KRAIL) has granted a total of 152 licences within the gambling sector. Among these, 138 licences were for gaming machines, three for gambling service providers, nine for table games, one for an online casino, and one for a roulette wheel.
Of the 194 licence applications received by the regulator, two were deemed insufficient due to unsatisfactory documentation, while one was outright rejected.
Simultaneously, there’s been mounting pressure on the government to bar members of the armed forces from gambling activities. A petition initiated by a soldier swiftly gathered momentum, surpassing the required 25,000 signatures to prompt presidential consideration.
