Dutch gambling operators react to the “irresponsible” proposition to prohibit online slots
The recent vote by Dutch MPs in favour of a ban on online slots, along with motions to prohibit all online gambling advertising and mandate financial risk checks, has drawn sharp criticism from the Netherlands Online Gambling Association (NOGA). NOGA characterised the move as “thoughtless and irresponsible.”
The motions, introduced by Michiel van Nispen of the Socialist Party, narrowly passed, leaving it to Minister for Legal Protection Franc Weerwind to assess their viability for implementation. However, gambling operators are appealing to Weerwind to exercise caution and disregard the proposals.
Director-General of NOGA, Peter-Paul de Goeij, said: “The House is trying to compel a decision based on inaccurate data, assumptions, and unfounded fears. Without sufficient solid data, making sound judgments becomes challenging, which is why extensive research is currently underway.”
NOGA cautioned that both a ban on online slots and advertising would play into the hands of unlicensed operators. They pointed out that there are already signs that gamblers are migrating to illegal platforms following previous advertising restrictions on mainstream media channels.

A recent study conducted by THL unveiled a prevailing disapproval of gambling within the Finnish populace
According to a population study conducted by the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) in 2023, a prevailing negative sentiment toward gambling was observed. 90% of respondents expressed the belief that efforts should be made to discourage gambling, with 61% opining that there are currently too many opportunities for gambling available. However, despite these reservations, a majority of 67% disagreed with the notion of a complete ban on gambling, while 58% advocated for individuals’ right to gamble at their discretion.
Moreover, while 20% of participants viewed gambling as beneficial for society overall, 55% expressed concerns about its detrimental effects on family life. The survey highlighted that gambling remained prevalent, with 70% of people aged 15-74 in mainland Finland having engaged in gambling activities within the past 12 months. Notably, gambling was most common among men and individuals aged 45-59.
The survey revealed that approximately 151,000 people in mainland Finland were grappling with gambling problems, with this issue particularly prevalent among men and young adults.
