Meanwhile, Portugal saw a notable 16.4% increase in online gambling revenue year-on-year in Q4 2023, reaching €227.4 million. This growth trend persisted for the sixth consecutive quarter, with a 5.6% rise compared to the previous quarter. Earlier it was reported that Portugal’s gambling revenue in Q3 2023 reached an impressive €215.3 million.
Online gaming experienced a significant surge, generating €154.5 million and marking a remarkable 40.7% increase from Q4 2022. Spending in this sector also climbed to €3.84 billion, reflecting a 28.7% rise. Among the games, slots dominated, constituting 83% of the spending, while French roulette and blackjack contributed 6.9% and 4.7%, respectively. Other games like dice games and poker also made notable contributions.
Contrarily, sports betting revenue witnessed a decline of 14.8% year-on-year, amounting to €72.8 million. However, there was an increase in spending by 16%, totaling €532.1 million. Football remained the most popular sport for betting, capturing 74.7% of bets, followed by basketball at 10.8%.
The Gambling Regulation and Inspection Service reported a surge in new online gambling accounts, which grew from 237,600 to 319,500 in the quarter. This brought the total number of active accounts to 4.2 million. Additionally, the number of self-excluded players rose to 215,000, marking an increase of 63,200. The regulator also took action against 23 unlicensed gambling sites.
As for land-based gambling, revenue amounted to €64.6 million, marking a slight decline of 3.9%. Slot machines contributed €51.4 million, experiencing a 3.5% decrease, while casino and bingo games generated €13.7 million.
