Santa Fe Province Legalises Online Gambling, While Chile Approves Bill for Online Gambling Regulation

The government of the Argentine province of Santa Fe approved a bill aimed at regulating online gambling. This newly embraced law supersedes the prior legislative act enforced since November 2020, which had permitted the province’s brick-and-mortar casinos to run online casino games amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The legislation also introduces a permit for accepting online sports betting and elevates the tax rate on earnings derived from online gambling from 10% to 15%. Authorisation for accepting online bets is granted solely to the brick-and-mortar casinos.

It’s worth noting that now the province hosts three casinos. Earlier, Switzerland granted new licences for casinos.

Meanwhile, the Chile’s Chamber of Deputies granted approval to a bill designed to regulate online gambling, which is currently prohibited in the country.

The proposed legislation outlines a 20% tax on the gross gambling income of online operators. Additionally, online bookmakers would be required to pay 2% of their annual gross income to national federations associated with the sports on which bets are placed. Furthermore, operators must pay at least 1% of their annual gross income to initiatives promoting responsible gaming.

The bill suggests an annual licence fee of 1,000 UTM for operators holding a general licence covering all types of gambling. Temporary licence holders would be subject to a fee of 100 UTM.

The document also introduces penalties for illegal gambling operators. In general, this bill marks a significant step towards creating a legal and regulated environment for online gambling in Chile.
