Meanwhile, a narrow majority of Dutch House of Representatives members have voted in favour of motions advocating the prohibition of online slots and the cessation of online gambling advertisements. Additionally, other motions have been tabled urging mandatory financial risk assessments and identification for gambling activities.
Proposed by Socialist Party MP Michiel van Nispen, these motions were part of a pool of 114 submissions to the House. The proposition to ban online slots, justified by the argument of its elevated risk factor, garnered 79 votes in favour.
Regarding advertising, the Netherlands already enforces a ban on untargeted gambling promotions, implemented last July. The new motion seeks to extend this prohibition to cover all forms of online advertising. While a previous attempt to put into practice such a ban failed in February, van Nispen’s recent proposal managed to secure a narrow majority with 77 votes.
However, these votes do not guarantee the adoption of these measures. Franc Weerwind, the Minister for Legal Protection, will evaluate the proposals and determine their potential approval. Weerwind aims to strike a delicate balance between stringent regulation and upholding an attractive regulated market for both players and operators. Implementing a ban on online slots could potentially drive players towards unregulated platforms, posing risks in terms of problem gambling and state revenue.
Earlier, the Dutch Gambling Authority (Kansspelautoriteit) released its 2023 market performance report.
